Consular legalization for documents of Spain

Spain is a member of the Hague Convention, while Vietnam is currently not a member of this Convention. Therefore, documents issued in Spain cannot be used legally in Vietnam by Apostille certification alone—they must go through the full consular legalization process.

1. Document Authentication System in Spain

Spain applies two systems of document authentication, depending on the country in which the documents will be used:

• Apostille Stamp and Seal:
  For documents intended for use in Hague Convention member countries.
• Consular Legalization Stamp and Seal:
  For documents intended for use in countries not party to the Hague Convention, including Vietnam.

2. Legalization Process for Spain Documents for Use in Vietnam

To have Spain documents legally recognized and accepted in Vietnam, two key steps must be completed:

• Consular Certification by a Competent Authority in Spain
  This step confirms the legal validity of the documents in Spain. (Apostille is not applicable in this case.)
• Consular Legalization at the Vietnamese Embassy or Consulate in Spain
  After being certified in Spain, the documents must be further legalized by a Vietnamese diplomatic mission in Spain to be valid for use in Vietnam.
